Team USA future Olympian Jesse Grupper flashed Jonathan Siegrist’s Pure Imagination (8c+) last week while on break from the comp season.
Located in Red River Gorge, Kentucky, Pure Imagination is a 25-meter route riddled with crimps and pockets, all placed over an overhanging sandstone wall. Featuring a boulder problem right at the beginning, this route is meant to pump you from the very first moves. The main crux of the route is placed right under the chains, taking the shape of a reachy boulder problem.
Established by Jonathan Siegrist in 2010, Pure Imagination was seconded by Sasha DiGiulian in 2011 on her sixth try after a 3-day battle with the crimpy line. She even graded it as a 9a by the time she had done it but the 8c+ grade was confirmed one year later by Alex Megos, who did the first flash of this line.
During the last ten years, this route has been flashed by a couple of world-class climbers—Alex Megos in November 2012 and Daniel Woods around the same time. In the same neighborhood of flashing, Adam Ondra managed to onsight Pure Imagination on the same day as Daniel Woods.
The last person to climb this American Classic before Jesse was Babsi Sangerl in April of this year, during her US trip.
Especially known for his success in the IFSC circuit, Grupper had a breakout season in the Lead World Cup Circuit, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals in 2022. This is the year he was awarded the Olympic Boarding Pass for Paris 2024 after earning a silver medal at the World Cup in Koper and gold at the Pan American Games in Santiago.
